Bongam Academy’s Gyeonggi Academy of Foreign Languages (Chairman Kang Young-joong) announced on the 7th that it successfully concluded the “Future Education Together: Strengthening Practical Competence in IB Teaching and Assessment” workshop, which was co-hosted with the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education from April 5 to 6.

The workshop, held at the Midas Hotel & Resort in Gapyeong, brought together teachers and administrators from candidate schools that are currently implementing or preparing for IB authorization. The event served as a meaningful platform to provide practical support and insights for educators and officials from the Gyeonggi, Chungnam, and Daegu Offices of Education, who have adopted or are in the process of introducing the IB curriculum following GAFL’s lead.

Since becoming the first public educational institution in Korea to adopt the International Baccalaureate (IB) program in 2011, GAFL has continued to innovate as a national model for IB education within the public sector. Following the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education’s initiative to expand IB implementation, GAFL and the Office have maintained close collaboration to promote the IB curriculum—considered a cornerstone of future-oriented education—throughout the province.

In 2023 and 2024, GAFL hosted the IB Forum on its campus, and this year, the school expanded its efforts by organizing the IB Workshop in Gapyeong.

Through these continued efforts, GAFL has gradually developed the structure and content of its programs to enhance teachers’ practical competencies in IB instruction. In addition to the core subjects of Korean, Mathematics, English, and History, the scope of the program has been expanded to include Chemistry and Economics.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a globally recognized comprehensive educational program adopted by more than 5,800 schools across 162 countries. In recent years, many regional and metropolitan Offices of Education in Korea have been actively promoting and expanding the adoption of the IB curriculum nationwide.

Shin Il-jin, Senior Supervisor at the School Education Policy Division of the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, stated, “This workshop was a meaningful opportunity to realize the collaborative teacher research culture of IB by sharing GAFL’s more than a decade of experience in operating the IBDP. I believe all participating teachers gained valuable insights through mutual growth, and that their practical competencies in IB teaching and assessment have been further strengthened.”

Principal Yuk Kwang-hee of GAFL added, “As a leading institution in future-oriented education, we will continue our efforts to contribute to the advancement of educational practices in Korea.”
